Images like the Necker Cube and the Devil’s Fork and even M. Multistable images are often fun to look at, since they function as a visual puzzle. Mutlistable pictures are interesting because they confuse the brain it is hard for the mind to capture the big picture because it is constantly switching between multiple figures. In other words, it looks at the big picture first, the sum of all the parts, and then later perceives all the components that make up the picture. Multistability is considered an aspect of Gestalt psychology, which suggests that the brain interprets visual inputs holistically. The brain is required to bounce back and forth between the two images. The image is considered multistable because the human mind can see two images in the graphic, but not both at the same time. And, of course, it sees both, flipping back and forth between the two. Probably the most famous (and possibly first recognized) multistable image, the duck-rabbit has been used for study in psychology for over a century to research how the brain makes sense out of what the eyes see. As you stare at the image, your brain can start to go crazy, not knowing if it should be perceiving a duck or a rabbit. You’ve probably seen multistable images before, like Eric Weisstein’s Duck-Rabbit. If you don’t see the woman, scroll to the end of this article for a clearer diagram of the subliminal imagery.

What your mind is being subjected to is a multistable image, where you see a lion’s face at first (because this is what you expect on the cover of a movie about a lion), but after further inspection you see the backside of a mostly naked woman wearing a thong and exposing the greater part of her derrière. If you haven’t paid attention to the image before, take a moment to see if you see anything in the image other than a lion’s face in the clouds. So let me know if you believe in subliminal messages. If you look at the Disney’s 2002 Lion King release poster, you may be subjecting yourself to a subliminal message. I mean part of the reason they’re subliminal is because they’re hidden to our conscious minds. It shocked me when I found these things out because I’m sure i’m not the only one that wasn’t aware of them. Believe it or not there are people with jobs to find out ways to make stores more money, simply by where they stock their items. Or the $2 bottled water in the fridge by the cash register where even though you can get a whole pack in the back, it is that expensive because it’s cold and for mainly for impulse buyers. There is a reason that they have all the little toys and candy up front because the little kids are going to cry and scream until they get them. Now whether you believe in it or not, there are plenty of other subliminal messages out there even in the way that grocery stores stock there food. I just find it so strange that these appear in these movies that we watched over and over as kids and slim to none of the people watching those videos picked up on it. If you research on Youtube I’m sure you can find many more but these were the ones that we talked about in my class.

Disney is, as I learned, susceptible to adding subliminal messages among many of the movies we remember so dearly as part of our childhood. For example it might be inaudible to the conscious mind (but audible to the unconscious or deeper mind) or might be an image transmitted briefly and unperceived consciously and yet perceived unconsciously.” In easier terms to understand, it a picture or image that is usually “hidden,” meaning it’s there but you usually don’t pick up on it.

The Disney I am talking about in this post is Disney movies, not the channel because that is something different entirely (obviously, have you seen it lately)? Disney is one thing that is very close to my heart it’s something I have always had fond memories of since I was very little and love still to this day. Disclaimer: I LOVE Disney! This is in to way to harp on them, just throwing this out there for anyone who cares.Īs I am sitting here watching “Tangled,” it brought me back to one of the things I actually remember from AP Psych, which is subliminal messages.
